01 / Opening

15 August 2026 marks the 81st Liberation Day of Korea. As an international student, I realised the part of this history I connect with most isn’t the part that happened in Korea. It’s the part that happened thousands of kilometres away from it.

02 / Japan annexes Korea

02 / Japan annexes Korea

In 1910, Japan annexed Korea, beginning 35 years of colonial rule. Korean language, names, culture, and government were suppressed under assimilation policies over the following decades. Resistance to that rule happened on the peninsula such as the March 1st Movement is well known. But it was also supported by Koreans living abroad.

03 / A diaspora organises

03 / A diaspora organises

Korean immigration to North America effectively began in 1903, when the RMS Gaelic brought 102 Korean labourers to work at the sugar plantations in Hawaii. By 1905, more than 7,000 Koreans were living and working there. They were not wealthy, and they were not close to home. But in 1909, one of them, Ahn Chang-ho founded the Korean National Association in San Francisco, uniting Korean communities across the United States around a single cause: Korea’s independence. Plantation workers in Hawaii sent portions of their wages back through the Association to fund the movement. In 1913, Ahn Chang-ho went further, founding the Young Korea Academy (Hungsadan) on a belief that independence had to be built from the ground up, through education and self-strengthening, not protest alone. When the March 1st Movement broke out in Korea in 1919, diaspora communities in Hawaii and California organised in solidarity: raising funds, petitioning foreign governments, and keeping the cause visible to the outside world.

04 / Liberation

04 / Liberation

On 15 August 1945, Japan’s surrender to Allied forces ended the occupation. Koreans call this day Gwangbokjeol, “the day the light returned.” Exactly three years later, on 15 August 1948, the Republic of Korea was formally established. Gwangbokjeol now commemorates both dates: the end of colonial rule, and the founding of the modern state.

05 / Why this part of this history?

05 / Why this part of this history?

I’m an international student living between Vancouver and Seoul, and right now I’m building apps that put humans at the centre. Specifically, I'm building an app that closes the gap between the language you’re learning and the one you think in. I found similarities between myself and people living in North America years ago. Koreans living far from home never forgot it. They built institutions, funded a cause they couldn’t participate in directly, and held onto language and identity while physically removed from both. I’m not doing anything comparable in scale or stakes, but I think about building something, from wherever you are, towards something that matters. Today, I thank all of them, for allowing me to build what I want as a Korean.
